Demystifying the Nationwide Natural Requirements Board (NOSB) for Farmers


Natural producers and processors should comply with strict requirements to grow to be licensed—however who decides what’s and isn’t allowed on natural farms? Not your certifier! The USDA Nationwide Natural Program (NOP), in session with the Nationwide Natural Requirements Board (NOSB), units these guidelines.

In 2024, the Nationwide Natural Coalition (NOC) hosted a Seeds of Success digital session for natural and transitioning farmers, the place a panel of farmers and advocates demystified the NOSB. Panelists defined the Board’s position in shaping natural requirements, how selections are made, and the way written and oral feedback can affect outcomes.

Panelists included Steve Ela (Former NOSB Chair, NOC NOSB Specialist, Ela Household Farms, CO), Harriet Behar (Former NOSB Chair, NOC Advisor, OFA Farmer Companies Advisor, Candy Springs Farm, WI), and Amy Bruch (Present NOSB Vice Chair, Cyclone Farms, NE).
