Not lengthy after my spouse and I acquired married, we purchased a pet hedgehog. Our plan had been within the works since our undergraduate days; nobody was extra able to personal a real-life hedgehog than we had been. We’d finished the analysis, purchased the gear, and owned a completely regular quantity of hedgehog décor: salt and pepper shakers, bathtub towels, Christmas ornaments, oven mitts, candlesticks—the standard stuff.
However one thing we weren’t ready for was how delicate hedgehogs are to the chilly. When the skin temperature drops into the 50s, hedgehogs—or the domesticated selection that we owned—go into hibernation.
Seems like a wonderfully regular factor, proper? In Baltimore within the winter in our first house, an ideal 72 levels was elusive. Hibernation sounded fairly good.
However right here’s the factor: whereas our little critter did all of the issues she believed obligatory for an extended, cozy slumber, what she was conducting in actuality was the full shuttering of her inner organs.
For our hedgehog, hibernation meant demise. And so for us, a comfortable, crisp night rapidly turned an train in jerry-rigging a wide range of heating apparatuses.
That looks as if an oversight within the normal hedgehog design, no? I typically questioned—and albeit, nonetheless do—why would an animal react to a wonderfully regular scenario by destroying itself? Why would that be a viable response? Hibernation is pure, and so is the chilly. And hedgehogs exist the world over in a wide range of climates.
So what’s the take care of ours?
St. Ignatius encourages us to discern the spirits, to fastidiously maintain as much as the sunshine and examine the internal actions of our soul. Is that this need for a brand new job, an even bigger home, or a brand new metropolis of God? Or is that this the work of the enemy of our human nature?
Ignatius was adamant that by analyzing our wishes, we come to deeper understanding of God’s Spirit at work. Our deepest wishes dwell inside us; they encourage us as we get away from bed within the morning and sometimes dictate how we spend our days (to paraphrase that well-known prayer, “Fall in Love”).
And but, we all know that our wishes can even lead us astray. The enemy of our human nature can twist these wishes, distracting us with inordinate wealth, an obsession with honors, and bloated delight. Those self same wishes that originate in our most genuine selves can lead us down a darkish path if we fail to be vigilant.
We return to my hedgehog conundrum. Are we conscious of these sides of ourselves that may lead us down the trail of destruction? Are we inadvertently sleepwalking into despair? Or are we awake and vigilant, alert to what we have to attain our fullest potential?
The excellent news is every time our hedgehog did start to float off into chilly slumber, all we needed to do to assist her was maintain her shut and coax her again awake. That comforting, insistent contact was sufficient to attract her again to herself.
How are we known as to be a heat presence for these in our lives and draw others again to themselves? When would possibly we have to enable others to return near us and remind us of who we are supposed to be?
The hedgehog conundrum factors to the easy incontrovertible fact that we’re complicated beings and that the uncooked materials of our lives can lead us deeper into God’s dream—but in addition far astray. However via discernment and group, we will awaken to our truest selves. We will turn out to be the individuals God goals we can be.
